Window shuts on transfer deadline day

Posted by Juan Estupendo on January 31, 2008 11:07 PM

Thursday, 31 January 2008: As the January transfer window finally shut, news of Welsh players embroiled in the annual final day bunfight was decidely thin on the ground.

All eyes were on Ninian Park where most Cardiff fans were praying the club would fend off any attempts by Premiership clubs to lure star man Joe Ledley away with a big money bid.

Come lunchtime City fans were heaving a mighty sigh of relief as Bluebird supremo Peter Ridsdale announced the club had rejected a big money bid from Everton for Ledley, and that the homegrown player was going nowhere........more

In a month where rumours about Wales' sometimes mecurial playmaker Jason Koumas abounded, the Wigan Athletic man finally sealed his stay at the JJB, with Lactics' boss Steve Bruce confirming that the former Cardiff City loanee was going nowhere.

Mark Hughes and Blackburn Rovers tracked Koumas for the length of the transfer window but were apparently put off by Wigan's attempt to recoup a larg slice of the £5.3m Wigan paid West Brom for the midfielder.......more

One player on the move was Manchester City's explosive young Welsh striker Ched Evans who sealed a loan to Norwich City for the rest of the season.

Great news for Wales manager John Toshack who rates the U21 international highly, and for Canaries fans who have seen Evans score four times in 12 appearances for the Carrow Road club.......more

As the clock ticked round into the evening and the transfer activity picked up a furious pace, another young Welshman was packing his kitbag and heading back to familiar pastures.

Derby County centre-half Lewin Nyatanga headed back to Barnsley on loan for the rest of the season, with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.......more

Sticking with the young guns Crewe Alexandra must have wondered what it was about them and Welsh strikers that made their Gresty Road ground such an unpalatable place to ply their trade, as transfer deadline day saw the second Welshman spurn the chance of a move to the Railwaymen.

A few days after Forest Green's goal machine Stuart Fleetwood passed up the opportunity to move to Crewe, Bournemouth's Wales U21 striker Sam Vokes also turned down the Alex.......more
